Albert “Sonny” Martin

ATHENS – After living a blessed and wonderful life, 94-year-old Albert “Sonny” Martin of Athens returned home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 with his loving family by his side.

Sonny was born on July 9, 1927 in Everett, Washington, the son of John R. and Clara B. (Bush) Martin. After serving his country in the military, he traveled to Maine where he met and married the love of his life Anna M. Tuttle on April 30, 1954 in Skowhegan. Together they raised five children. He worked in the shoe manufacturing industry and held several management positions until his retirement.

Sonny was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He spent many hours working in his carpentry workshop constructing various objects that his children still enjoy and cherish today. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, creating many treasured memories with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a founding member of the Open Bible Church and dedicated much of his life to serving the Lord in many capacities.

He had a strong and unshakable love for his Lord. His desire was for every member of his family to know and love God, so that they would all be reunited one day.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, four sisters; his wife Anna of 59 years; and their son Dennis.

He is survived by four children, Julie Miller and her husband, Donald, of Concord, NH, Dana Martin and his wife, Nancy, of Athens, Sandy Whiting and her husband, Timothy of Athens, and Lori Wiles and her husband , Rod, of Skowhegan; one sister, Viola (Mary) Oxendine of Brookings, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank those who took such loving care of him during the last days of his life at Redington Fairview General Hospital.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 13 at the Open Bible Church in Athens with Reverend Richard Haynie and Reverend Al Buzzell officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens.

Arrangements are in the care and control of Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
