What do you want to see inside the new Columbia Mall?

Editor’s Note: The Porch Talk series explores the most recent events around the city and what residents are saying.

The Columbia Mall was a place longtime residents remember as a central hub for shopping and socializing.

However, the once thriving 35-acre mall and retail center has remained largely vacant in recent years.

The real estate owners, Hull Property Group, are redeveloping the property into a full scale retail hub, consisting of more than a dozen commercial businesses, retail stores and restaurants.

John Mulherin, vice president of Hull Property Group, told the Daily Herald that the new wave of community growth and prosperity marks the perfect time for the property to get a facelift.

The first phase involves the demolition of approximately 112,000 square feet of the existing structure of the mall, while modifying approximately 90,000 square feet into high-end, exterior-facing retail space. Phase two would involve the redevelopment of the former JC Penney space as a possible grocery store site.

When complete, the transformed site is expected to generate approximately $ 49.5 million in sales per year, generating approximately $ 1.3 million in new sales tax dollars each year.

Eight months after the start of the new project, no major announcements have been made regarding potential businesses that will open on the site.

“Honestly, you want things for teenagers. Things that will appeal to the youngest. Teens want to spend money – so American Eagle and Hot Topic. Maybe a food court. Since we’re so close to Nashville, how about a boot and a hat store? Maybe a video game store. A Starbucks, everybody wants coffee. ”

“I would love to see unique things that you can’t find anywhere else. Columbia is a drive away, so if I commute I want to get something that I can’t find anywhere else. good food while shopping.

“Personally, I would like to see local businesses. Local artisans and that sort of thing. The new restaurants are good, but the big chains are not. Maybe there can be a big farmers market.

“Shopping and shoes. We need a big shoe store. It’s the thing that I have the most difficulty finding here in Columbia. You can never have too many shoes. I want to continue to see a variety of retail options. would love to see another great store to add to the mix and another big reputable grocery store.

“I would also like to see more opportunities for more local artisans. The chains are cool, and I say that as a chain owner, but I also like to see our local products.”
